Chapter 11

Raoul

It was with great reluctance that I woke Felix up. He looked a little better now that we were no longer in the car, but I still wished that he could have another good night’s sleep and maybe some food. Perhaps my brother had something in his kitchen we could prepare.

I had let Felix sleep for as long as he needed. My own stomach rumbled with the need for food and also a bathroom. I’d endure the discomfort for another night if it meant Felix was well rested.

“Is your brother here?” Felix asked once he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

I nodded. Hugo had arrived late last night. I’d texted him to let him know I was sleeping in my room. If he had questions about the human scent in his home, he didn’t text them.

“Is he going to be mad?”

I shook my head and smiled. “Disappointed maybe, but he’s not going to be mad. Not at you.”

“I’m not worried about me. I don’t want you to get in trouble. This is just as much my fault as it is yours.”

I raised a brow. “And just how do you figure that?”

“We’re in this together, Raoul. I’m not going to let you stand alone on this.”

My Felix, ready to take on a seven-hundred-year-old dragon in my honor. He would stand before the Lords themselves to defend me. I kissed his cheek and tried to hide the emotions welling up inside me. He barely knew me, but he would take on the world.

“Thank you,” I said.

The two of us used the bathroom and brushed our teeth as best as we could. It was larger than the motel bathroom, so it was easier to maneuver. My brother kept the room stocked with extra toothbrushes.

I held Felix’s hand as we walked out of the bedroom and down the stairs to where my brother was. He knew we were here, as he could scent us, but I held my hand behind my back. I didn’t want to show off the handcuffs until absolutely necessary.

Hugo raised an eyebrow when he saw me. He sat at the kitchen counter, a cup of steaming coffee in front of him and his tablet on the counter. “I’m dying to hear this story,” he said. “You’re here with a human who smells not quite human…”

“What?” I looked at Felix. He had just as much confusion in his face as I did. “Felix is human. We’ve been in close proximity for the past day. Perhaps that’s why he might smell off to you.”

“Perhaps,” Hugo said. “What the hell’s going on? You start your job in three days. Why are you driving across the country?”

Felix squeezed my hand. His presence there gave me more comfort than he realized.

“It’s really complicated,” I said. Where could I even start?

“I was afraid it was going to be,” Hugo said. He walked over to the minibar and uncapped the decanter and poured a splash of brandy in his coffee, then settled back on the kitchen stool.
